Makeup Artist...

PhotoYou may be fantastic at doing your makeup and look a million dollars when you go out... but do you know what makeup looks good in front of the lens? Most models starting out do their own makeup... nothing wrong in that, and some models can do a really top job. BUT for your portfolio shoot, always consider getting the help of a MUA.
MUA’s will know what is required and what looks right in front of the camera and will be able to make subtle changes through out the shoot to assist the photographer in getting “different” looks out of you. MUA’s need portfolio’s too and again, it’s an exchange market out there, they will sometimes offer their services in exchange for images to use in their portfolios. Remember too, some of the top models have used the same MUA for most of their professional career, so, like photographers, they are always looking out for the next person who will become “the face” of a brand or product.
Establishing a relationship with a MUA early on, will pay dividends in the future... they will know your face and what works and doesn't with you.

Some makeup tips for your photo shoot from top North West makeup artist Jane Louise...

I feel the best place to start with this advice for make up is to start off by helping you to look after your skin, the best foundation for a great make up look is great skin, if that’s not right in the first place, your make up will never look perfect.

First things first choose a skin care range that is suited to your skin, go to a beauty counter and ask for a skin assessment so that you know. Follow this routine and you will have your skin on its way to being the best it can be:
Cleanse, tone and moisturise every morning and every day
Exfoliate two to three times a week
Deep cleanse once a week
Moisturising face treatment once a week
Also apply a good eye cream day and night, but not too much as it will make the skin heavy and cause your eyes to look “droopy”

Whilst we are on the subject of getting skin clear, there are a few things that you can do that will improve your skin dramatically

Drink Water…lots and lots and lots of it
Don’t Smoke, it makes your skin go dry and gives it a gray tinge…I can tell by looking at someone’s skin if they smoke.

Eat plenty of fresh foods and avoid processed foods.

If you follow all the above advice your skin will start to improve within 6-8 weeks.

Ok make up tips…

Face and Cheeks

Obviously the thing we all want is flawless skin…start off by using a light moisturiser 20 minutes before you apply your make up.

Start off by concealing any imperfections that you have and balancing out any uneven skin tones.

Apply your foundation with a sponge or brush…make sure that the colour is a perfect match for your skin, orange is not a good look! If in doubt on the colour apply one shade lighter and then you can always correct with a touch of bronzer to finish.

Apply the foundation a little thicker than you normally would, photographers lighting can be a little harsh.
Apply concealer under your eyes, again a little thicker than you normally would but making sure the colour matches…don’t be tempted to use a highlighter here as it will reflect the light of the flash and your under eyes will look slimy!

Apply a dusting of translucent powder, don’t go to heavy with this or apply with a sponge as it will go cakey.

Apply a blush of your choice again…apply a little more than you normally would.

To give the effect of more defined cheekbones apply a little contouring powder just underneath your cheekbones…a little goes a long way.

If you have applied a foundation colour that is a little lighter than your natural skin tone…brush over some bronzer to get a perfect match.

Eyes

Always define your eyebrows…they frame your entire face

Use a little highlighter on your brow bone to give a lifting effect.

Remember that you will loose up to about 40% of colour on pictures so remember this when applying your eye colour's.

If you are going for a heavy eye look with dark colour's its always a good plan to do your eye make up first and then apply your base so that your eye make up does not fall on to your base.

Curl your eyelashes to open your eyes

Use false eyelashes or your eyelashes will not show up on the photographs.

Lips

Always apply a lip balm approx 30 minutes before applying a lipstick but remember to remove it before you apply lipstick.

Don’t apply too much gloss as the flash will reflect.

I hope the above hints and tips are helpful and good luck!
